The Manchester United and England captain, 29, may be known for his aggressive playing style but he tells a new documentary that, when away from the pitch, he is a 'family man' happy to take a back seat.

While in one life he has the referee and the stern glare of manager Louis van Gaal to keep him in check, at home he has his wife who said she is not afraid to 'tell him off'.
But the footballer - nicknamed 'the pitbull' by Cristiano Ronaldo - has also revealed a more tender side, admitting to writing poems for Mrs Rooney and putting aside Thursday evenings for a date night with his wife.
The rare glimpse into the home life of the £60million footballer also sees him show off his prized possessions, including a collection of guitars signed by his music idols such as Noel Gallagher and Sir Paul McCartney and an extensive trophy room which boasts his sporting accolades.

Rooney is said to be so enamoured with signed rock stars' guitars that Mrs Rooney said it was now her go-to Christmas or birthday present for her husband - despite the fact he cannot play a note.
Talking on Wayne Rooney: The Man Behind the Goals - which has been made to mark him breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's 50 goal record this month to become England's most prolific ever goal scorer - he said: 'Outside of football [Mrs Rooney is] the strong one, so she makes all the decisions. She's a great mum and she's great for me and great for the children.'
She adds: 'We're both from strong down to earth families. We're both different characters. If Wayne needs telling off I'll tell him off. And vice versa but we get on well, we're mates.'

Childhood sweethearts, the Rooneys married in 2008. The BBC One show, airing on Monday, reveals how he is a keen poet and often pens verses to surprise his wife.
He said: 'I used to love writing poems before I was with Coleen, just normal poems. I used to like to write little stories.
'So when I first got with Coleen I used to write her a lot of poems but that's died down a little bit of late'.
But according to his wife, his creative flair is still going strong. 'Recently we went on holiday. I went to bed with the kids and when I woke up there was a poem on the side that he had left me, which was nice,' she said.
His proposal was less romantic, however. Too excited to wait to arrive at the restaurant, the show reveals how he popped the question in a petrol station forecourt before heading back to Mrs Rooney's parents' house, where her mother cooked them corned-beef hash.

Equally, their first date was far from the dream, with them seeing James Bond spoof Austin Powers at the local Showcase Cinema.
But it is a tradition they have kept up, often using their Thursday evening date night to see a film.
Interviewed by Gary Lineker, who presents the documentary, Rooney also reveals how his wife can be 'bossy' - which he quickly rephrases that to 'organised' following her disapproval.
She said: 'You would forget everything and anything if I didn't tell you what to do. Or he'll take something in if someone's had a baby or if it's one of the other player's kid's birthdays, I'll say: "Will you take that in and give it to them?"
'Weeks later I will look in the boot of his car and there's still the present in the back of the car; thank you cards for our kids, a year later still in the car'.

Charged with leading his club and country on the field, Rooney does bring one aspect of this authoritarian streak home, with Mrs Rooney describing her husband as a 'strict' parent to their two boys, Kai, five, and Klay, two.
They also have another child on the way, which they say in the programme they hope is a girl.
However, she adds that he can also be a 'big kid', allowing the children to play football inside the house.
It seems this stern side might be necessary as, when asked if either son had inherited his fiery temper, Rooney points at Kai and adds: 'If he doesn't get his own way: nightmare.'
The documentary was suggested by the Rooney camp in an effort to improve his public image, with has been hampered by a seemingly grumpy temperament on the field, a failure to perform in international competitions and off-field embarrassments, including visits to prostitutes behind his wife's back.
That latter scandal is only vaguely alluded to by England manager Roy Hodgson who, when asked about Rooney's greatest weakness, said: 'When he was younger there's things that happened off the field, he's made mistakes in the past.'

WHAT WAYNE ROONEY'S FELLOW PROS AND EX MANAGERS SAY ABOUT HIM

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: 'I would love to have played with him. I will just have to continue watching him instead.'
‘When he was playing with Cristiano Ronaldo, all the work was done by Wayne. But he didn’t get the credit because Ronaldo was scoring all the goals.’
Ryan Giggs, recalling the first time he faced Rooney, then a teenager, at Old Trafford: 'He knocked the ball past me. And I was like, "Woah! What happened there?"'
Gary Neville, England coach and former Man Utd team mate, reveals how Rooney is now very much the glue holding a typically eclectic national squad together. ‘He is everybody’s mate,'
Sven Goran Erikson (England manager when Rooney was selected despite being unfit for World Cup 2006): 'There would have been a revolution if I hadn't picked him. They would've thrown me in the sea!
Cristiano Ronaldo: 'He was so powerful I was calling him Pitbull. The power of Wayne Rooney is his mentality and strength and he never stops.
'He’s a fantastic team player and he scores! He’s a fantastic boy and he helped me a lot when he came to join us in Manchester.'
'It was amazing to play with him. But the future, nobody knows, maybe we will play one day together again.'
Glowing praise: Rooney's former Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo also spoke about the striker, saying he helped him a lot - even hinting they might play again together one day

Mrs Rooney was equally opaque when she said: 'He was young and had done some stupid things, like most lads. Some things you do and you don't do again.'
Lineker takes a soft touch with Rooney and sang his praises while promoting the programme, telling The Radio Times that it is unfair how the football player has been branded stupid.
He said: 'You can't be that quality of footballer and have the spatial awareness and on-pitch intelligence and be stupid.
'We [footballers] might not be the most educated in the world, but you can't get to the very top without having a reasonable level of intelligence.'
While Rooney may now live in a mansion, the rest of the family do not appear to be sharing in the luxury.
His two brothers still live in the same area of Liverpool where the family grew up - one in the terraced house the family once called home, while the other lives two doors down.
Rooney's mother also still works as a dinner lady in the school he attended as a child.
