Rihanna has admitted that constantly being reminded of ex boyfriend Chris Brown's brutal assault on her in 2009 has only prolonged the pain of the incident.
The star was attacked by her then boyfriend inside his Lamborghini the night before the 2009 Grammys, with photos of her bruised and swollen face subsequently leaked to the website TMZ.
In a candid new interview with Vanity Fair, the singer is asked how it feels to always be the 'poster child for domestic violence,' admitting that it's like being 'punished over and over' when she's reminded of the horrific incident.

Over five years after the assault, Rihanna angrily condemned the NFL and CBS when they chose not to play her hit Run This Town during an opening-week broadcast for the NFL season last year, with the broadcaster citing any connection which could be made between Chris Brown' assault on her and the Ray Rice domestic abuse scandal.
peaking out on that incident, and how it feels to forever be linked with the issue of domestic violence, Rihanna has told Vanity Fair.
'Well, I just never understood that, like how the victim gets punished over and over. It's in the past, and I don't want to say "Get over it," because it's a very serious thing that is still relevant; it's still real.'
'I was very protective of him': Rihanna, 27, revealed she reunited with Brown after he beat her in 2009 because she thought he was misunderstood and that she could change him. The couple are pictured in December 2012
'A lot of women, a lot of young girls, are still going through it. A lot of young boys too. It's not a subject to sweep under the rug, so I can't just dismiss it like it wasn't anything, or I don't take it seriously.'
'But, for me, and anyone who's been a victim of domestic abuse, nobody wants to even remember it. Nobody even wants to admit it. So to talk about it and say it once, much less 200 times, is like … I have to be punished for it? It didn't sit well with me.'
The interview also sees Rihanna speak about her decision to get back together with Chris after the assault, because she thought she could change him.

Even though she's constantly linked with other guys, Rihanna said the Loyalty hitmaker remains her 'last real boyfriend.'
She said that she blamed herself as much as him for rekindling their romance in late 2012.
In 2013, she asked a judge to lift a restraining order put in place by the court.
Rihanna said she felt like she could be Brown's 'guardian angel' and he just needed 'someone to encourage them in a positive way and say the right thing.'
But in the end, she said, she was a reminder to him of what he had done and what had happened and she realized that her willingness to put up with his behavior meant he would never really respect her.
'Sometimes you just have to walk away,' the Diamonds performer told Vanity Fair.
As far as her love life goes these days, Rihanna insisted in the interview that she is reluctant to date.
The pressure of paparazzi and the rumors that swirl whenever she's pictured with someone make it very difficult, she explained.
'I’ve had to be so conscious about people—what they say and why people want to be with me, why people want to sleep with me…. It makes me very guarded and protective. I learned the hard way,' she said.
Guarded: The Diamonds singer said she hasn't really had a boyfriend since she and Brown parted and she doesn't have the time to devote to fostering a new romance. She's seen in Paris on October 2
