National Sports Commission have ruled out the recruitment of foreign based athletes by any federation to represent the country.
NSC Director-General, Alhassan Yakmut made the charge while speaking to sports journalists in Brazzaville. He stated that sports federations should rather develop home grown talents that have potentials to do the country proud in future events.
“The NSC will not welcome the recruitment of foreign athletes. This however, does not affect Nigerian born athletes in overseas, they are free to come for trials and compete with the home based athletes.
“Before they can come, we will make checks to ascertain if they have any Nigerian parents. They have no criminal records and are of good character.
“Even when they make the team they must earn the same allowances earned by the local athletes,” said Yakmut.
Last year the Athletics Federation of Nigeria recruited a host of US born athletes, some of whom claimed to have Nigerian roots. This development sparked controversy, which has just died down. At the ongoing 2015 African Games, none of the foreign athletes have been spotted.
