Transport operators, travellers, hail FG on availability of petrol

Abuja – A cross section of Nigerians have applauded the Federal Government over the availability of petrol to ease movement during the Eid el-Kabir celebration.
Some travellers who spoke in Abuja on Wednesday, said the festive season looked promising as transport fare remained stable with no fuel queues.
Mr Isah Sule, an official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), said he was happy with the present situation as the absence of fuel scarcity would ease movements across the country.
Sule, who is also the Secretary, Lagos-Ibadan Line Unit, said that 2015 Eid el-Kabir celebration would be better than the previous ones because travellers were not facing any form of hardship in terms of fuel scarcity or increase in transport fare.
He commended the Federal Government for ensuring the availability of fuel, noting that drivers had no room to increase transport fare.
“We thank God for the situation we have found ourselves now; before, by Sallah time we would have heard that there is no fuel anywhere, and petrol stations would have been hoarding fuel too.”
Also commenting, Mr Ahmed Musa, a commercial transport operator from Madalla, said the passenger turnout had been impressive with passengers outnumbering the cars available.
Musa attributed the massive turnout to the availability of fuel in the country.
“Last year, there were no passengers; but you can see today, we have enough passengers.
“Even though there is no car on ground for people going to Kano, they have to join the Kaduna car and passengers are really patient, knowing there is no hurry because fuel is abundantly available.
“This is a great improvement and we are happy with the efforts of the new administration so far,’’ he said.
On the issue of security at motor parks, Mr. Bashir Adamu, a representative of Kaduna Line Taxi, said effective security measures had been deployed at the parks to ensure a hitch-free celebration.
“We have a strong security checkpoint which checks all vehicles and ensures that passengers stay with their luggage.
“We must check every vehicle entering the park and ensure luggage checks; our security personnel, who are also union members, inquire vividly passengers’ routes and destinations.
“All the drivers in the park cannot go out without a valid pass and if they refuse to open their car booths, we make sure that they go back without entering the park,’’ Adamu explained.
