Tragic: Linda Carson, 44, (pictured left and right) died in her husband's arms after being killed in a hit-and-run while walking her dog just five minutes from her home in Motherwell, Lanarkshire
He comforted his 44-year-old wife but she was pronounced dead soon afterwards when the emergency services arrived. It is believed the dog survived.
Witnesses saw the driver get out and run away as residents tried to help his dying victim in Motherwell, Lanarkshire.
The car hit Mrs Carson at 8.12pm on Muirhouse Road – the focus of local complaints about speeding – while travelling round a bend before it crashed into brick pillars at the entrance to a tower block.
Gary Paterson, 28, a loading bay operator who lives on the 13th floor of the neighbouring tower block, said: ‘We were just having dinner when we heard a crash outside in the street.

'There was an explosion which sounded like a plane crash. I looked out of the window and saw a body lying next to a car. A man got out of the car and ran round to look at the body.
‘I thought he was going to try to help her, but then he ran off, leaving her and the car behind, the coward.
‘When I ran down, there were two girls trying to give her CPR. It was pandemonium, so I stayed and tried to help out as much as I could.
‘Eventually the police came and told everyone to go away as she had passed away.’

Mr Paterson added: ‘The speeding on the street is terrible. I thought they were going to start putting speed bumps up along the road, or wee islands to slow drivers down.
‘If you look at the road where you come in at the top, it’s a straight road all the way down to where it curves and goes straight again, like a horseshoe.
‘There is nothing here to slow anyone down so they just rattle down the street. It’s a danger to everyone – and themselves.’
Lindsay Gillen, 25, said he was ‘shocked’ such a ‘tragic’ incident could happen on a street his children play on.
Yesterday, tributes were paid by friends and neighbours of Mrs Carson, whose husband and 11-year-old daughter Gemma were being comforted by relatives at their home.

The family declined to comment, but a friend said: ‘Everyone is absolutely devastated at what happened, we can’t believe it.
‘Linda was such a lovely person and we are just shattered that she has gone. She was just out walking her dog on Sunday evening, as she did every day, when this happened.
‘We don’t know all the details of what exactly happened, but the police are keeping the family informed.
‘One of the people who went to help Linda contacted Robert because the number was on the dog’s collar. He went up to the scene, but there was nothing that could be done for her.’

Another neighbour said: ‘She doted on her dog Buster and I would see her out walking him every day. She was a very nice lady and my heart just goes out to the family.
‘Her husband and daughter will be devastated.’
Other residents said the road where the accident happened is known for speeding cars and called on North Lanarkshire Council to introduce traffic calming measures.
Lisa McAteer wrote on Twitter: ‘Maybe now someone’s been knocked down & killed @nlcpeople will maybe do something about the lack of speed control measures on muirhouse road?!’
Bouquets of flowers were left at the scene of the crash. Police are said to be following a positive line of inquiry.
Sergeant John Tait of the Motherwell Road Policing Unit said: ‘We are appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and saw what happened to get in touch on 101 or at Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where all calls will remain anonymous.’
In another hit and run incident, a man in his fifties was very seriously injured when a car struck him at 9.45pm on Sunday in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. The car did not stop, but drove off towards Lothian Road.
The man was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he is in a critical condition.
