Wrexham manager Gary Mills has bolstered his goalkeeping options by bringing in Newport County stopper Rhys Taylor on loan until January.
Before his arrival, the Dragons boss was using youngster Liam Sharpe as his main back-up for first choice keeper Cameron Belford.
Competition for the number one jersey has now increased with the signing of the former Wales u21s player, who joined in with training at Colliers Park today ahead of Wrexham’s National League home game against Barrow on Saturday.
The 25-year-old joined the Exiles in the summer after his impressive displays for Macclesfield Town in the Conference over the last few seasons earned him a move to League Two.
After letting him go out on loan County boss John Sheridan said Taylor was ‘too good’ to remain on the bench.
“Financially it enables me to help build in other areas and I think that Rhys is too good to be a number two.
“He is too good to be sitting on the bench and not playing football. I have had a chat with Rhys and he is all for the move.”
Taylor started his career at Chelsea where he emerged through the youth ranks.
Following a number of loan spells, he left the Blues and spent brief periods at Southend United and Preston North End before establishing himself with the Silkmen for whom he made more than 100 appearances.
Despite making his debut for Newport on September 1 in their Football League Trophy first round match against Swindon Town, he has found first team football hard to come by at Rodney Parade.
Taylor has now taken up the option to come to the Racecourse until the transfer window re-opens in January.
