The bitter leadership tussle that tore the Hausa and Fulani communities at Calabar metropolis, Cross River State, apart for over one year is now over. The Ndidem of Quas and Paramount Calabar Municipality His Majesty, Ndidem Patrick Agbor V, who brokered the peace deal, confirmed substantive heads for both groups.
They are Alhaji Sani Baba Gombe and Alhaji Salisu Sarki Lawal, as the first substantive head of Hausa/Fulani Community under the Calabar Municipality Council and Calabar South respectively. The Ndidem disclosed that onward, both the Hausa/Fulani communities of Calabar South and Calabar municipality would operate as separate autonomous entities under their respective host local government areas.
The paramount ruler made the pronouncement in his palace to end the over one year feud between leaders of the two communities.
Uphold existing restrictions
In a chat with Niger Delta Voice, the royal father charged the communities to maintain the existing political boundaries, rally around their people, ensure peaceful coexistence, tolerance and respect to laws of the state, local government and ensure that their allegiance is first to the Quas people.
“Although, you may wish to form an apex body to bring all Hausa leaders together, for the common good and development of the state, such synergy will depend on agreement by the respective representatives of Hausa/Fulani across the state, “ he said.
“For now, we have not officially received any information on the formation of any apex body, but for now, you are to limit yourself to welfare and security of your different communities and avoid transcending into areas you do not legally cover,” he added.
He tasked both heads of Hausas for Calabar South and Municipality councils to be responsible by bearing both positive and negative consequences of heading people from different states of the North under their watch. He also warned them not to arrogate excess powers to themselves, stressing that their role is that of liaising between their people and the certificated traditional leaders of the Quas.
He appreciated the solidarity given to his predecessor by the Hausas and their presence during his inauguration as the new Ndidem- in- council.
New Hausa/Fulani leaders pledge allegiance
In their reactions, the head of Hausa/Fulani for Calabar Municipality, Alhaji Sani Baba Gombe and his Calabar South counterpart, Alhaji Salisu Sarki Lawal, appreciated the Ndidem for the bold steps he took to bring peace between them and promised to operate in consonance with the dictates of the Ndidem and his respective Ntoes.
