A bus carrying police officers has crashed into a ravine in the north of Argentina, killing about 41 people.
The crash happened near Salta - about 932 miles north of Buenos Aires - during the early hours of the morning local time, according to the region's emergency director Ernesto Flores.
The bus, part of a convoy of three carrying the gendarmes officers, plunged around 20m after the driver lost control, according to a police statement.
Authorities say there were about 60 people on the bus, with survivors being taken to hospital and rescue workers still at the scene.
Gustavo Solis, mayor of Rosario de la Frontera in Salta, said the road was known to be in bad condition and was avoided by locals, especially at night.
Police said in a statement that visibility was good at the time of the accident so they were not ruling out mechanical failure as a cause.

The bus came off the road at 02:00 local time (05:00 GMT) near the town of Rosario del Fuente in Salta province, police officials said.
It was travelling on national highway 34 when the driver lost control of the vehicle as he was coming over the bridge, they said.
