Officers closed the northern line from South Wimbledon.
Heavily-armed officers swarmed the underground station after receiving reports of a man threatening passengers.
Shocked commuters watched on in horror as the officers swooped into the station.
Passengers were ordered to evacuate the train as armed police searched for the suspect matching a description given to them.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We were called to a man threatening people apparently with a pair of scissors.
"Armed officers attended just because a man was allegedly armed with weapon."
The spokesman said there were no "wider security implications" of the incident.
Onlookers took to Twitter to express their shock at the incident.
One wrote: "It's so chaotic and fearful everywhere in #London. #TootingBroadWay tube station evacuated by armed Police"
Another said: "Omg Tooting Broadway bit too close to home now #worried".
However officers have now "stood down" after failing to find a man matching the description they were given.
