A HEROIC police dog named Diesel has been killed in the police terror raid targeting Abdelhamid Abaaoud – the alleged mastermind behind the Paris terror attacks.
The seven-year-old Belgian shepherd dog, or Malinois, was “killed by terrorists” when French special forces raided an apartment building in Saint-Denis early on Wednesday morning.
Police National tweeted:"Diesel, a seven-year-old Malinois, police dog for RAID [France's anti-terrorist police unit], was killed by terrorists in the ongoing operation."
The police spokesman said that dogs such as Diesel who are trained to assist on operations where there is a risk of explosives were “indispensable” to the elite unit.
The brave dog was reportedly the first to be sent into an apartment, which was used by at least six jihadis in the run up to the attacks, to assess the level of danger before they stormed it.

Reports suggest Diesel was killed when a woman, said to be Abaaoud's jihadi bride, fired an AK47 at police before blowing herself up with a suicide belt during the anti-terror operation.
Tributes are pouring in from across the world from wellwishers applauding Diesel and his police handler for their bravery.
The hashtag #Jesuisunchien [translated to English as "I'm a dog"] has gone viral since Twitter users heard of the dog's death.

At least two suspected terrorists have been killed in a terror raid carried out by French Policefollowing Friday's terror attack in Paris.
Five police officers are also said to have suffered injuries in the operation.
Special SWAT teams were on the scene around the apartment where the suspected mastermind Abaaoud was caged in.
Abaaoud, from Belgium, was originally thought to have fled to Syria but police said he was holed up inside the flat in the Saint-Denis area of Paris.
He was in the building with a number of other terrorists.
They barricaded themselves inside the apartment before the bloody shoot-out.
Automatic gunfire and explosions were heard during the siege – which has left at least four officers wounded.
Around seven huge blasts took place, including that of the suicide bomb.
Police made seven arrests in connection with the siege.
One of those apprehended said in police interview he rented the home and handed it over to two Belgian men.
The French authorities said the siege ended at 10.50am GMT as a bloodied and half naked suspect was dragged out of the apartment block through broken glass.
The fate on the ringleader is still unclear.
