Governor Emmanuel To Swoop On Prostitutes In Uyo

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state has moved to evacuate commercial sex workers from the streets of Uyo, the state capital, NAN reports.
This was disclosed by the Dr. Glory Edet, the commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Akwa Ibom.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with representatives of female students in tertiary institutions in the state, Edet said that prostitutes constituted nuisance along the streets of the state capital and this is not good for the image of the state.

She said: “As a ministry, we play a major role in the implementation of programmes that promote the development of women.
“It is, therefore, necessary to provide orientation for young women to enable them to grow into responsible mothers.
“We urged you students to always respect constituted authorities, engage in meaningful ventures, dress decently, shun cultism in school, inculcate the spirit of hard work, humility and fear of God for brighter future.
“Gov. Udom Emmanuel and his wife, Martha, were gender sensitive and friendly, and this influenced the appointment of women into key leadership positions in the state.”
Edet also called on women in leadership position to be good representatives by exhibiting excellent and quality leadership.
Governor Udom Emmanuel had been declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner in the April 11 governorship election.
However, it was reported that the election was allegedly marred with violence, harassment of voters, hijacking of election materials among many others which led international and local observers to pass an unanimous verdict that it was a sham and recommend a complete cancellation of the exercise.
According to the APC, there was no election in the state and its candidate, Umana Okon Umana, had to challenge the victory at the tribunal seeking a cancellation of the purported election.
Following the election petition tribunal verdict as the election was nullified 18 local government areas and ordering a rerun, both Umana and Governor Emmanuel approach the Appeal Court to seek redress.
While Emmanuel is demanding the tribunal’s verdict be overturned, Umana is demanding the entire cancellation of the election in the 31 local government areas.
