McSmith Ochendu, one of the acclaimed bad boys of Nollywood, has explained why he decided to quit smoking after 22 years of actively practicing the act.
Ochendu, who said he has stopped smoking for about six months now, described himself as one of the most active smokers in Africa, if not the world.
According to him, “I started smoking in 1993, and I was very active. Those who know me will confirm it to you. I stopped after realising that I wasn’t gaining anything from it. I thought of it, all the awards I have won came through acting.
“All the money I spend comes from acting, and I have never received any award or cash reward for being the best smoker. So that is why I decided to quit.”
Ochendu confessed that though it was not an easy decision to take and sustain,“but with determination and Jah on my side, I’m waxing stronger.”
Speaking on the crisis that has been rocking the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) for many years now, the lanky actor explained that “this is because you cannot build on illegality. We have one common enemy, the Board of Trustees. They see AGN as their private enterprise. But God has delivered us from their claws. We have got our victory through the court.
“These same people didn’t allow Zack Orji to pilot the affairs of the guild the good way he would have loved to when he was president. They harassed and sacked him, and brought in Ejike Asiegbu. Ejike wanted to continue from where Zack Orji stopped, but the BoT didn’t allow him because he was not dancing to their tunes.
“These men (BoT members) have always been our problem but thank God they have been dissolved. We are now breathing fresh air; the story is no longer the same. Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has left Egypt and we are now on our way to the promise land.“
